Growing, Learning and Exploring Together
At Worth Primary School, our allotment is a wonderful outdoor learning space where children can explore nature, develop practical skills and experience the excitement of growing their own food.
Throughout the school year, our children have opportunities to discover how plants grow, understand where their food comes from and learn the importance of caring for living things and the environment.
Our Key Stage 1 children aim to visit the allotment weekly, giving them valuable opportunities to experience the changing seasons and take an active role in planting, nurturing and harvesting their own produce.
From Plot to Plate!
This year, our children have been particularly successful in growing potatoes, rhubarb and tomatoes, and have thoroughly enjoyed seeing the results of their hard work!
One of the most exciting parts of our allotment experience is being able to harvest our produce and bring it back to school, where the children have opportunities to prepare, cook and taste the food they have grown themselves.
We have enjoyed making delicious dishes, including rhubarb crumble, mashed potatoes and homemade chips, alongside other tasty creations.
These experiences help children understand the journey of food from plot to plate, encouraging them to try different foods, develop practical cooking skills and take pride in what they have achieved.
There is something particularly special about eating food you have grown yourself!
Learning Beyond the Classroom
Our allotment provides meaningful, hands-on learning opportunities that support many areas of the curriculum.
Children take part in preparing soil, sowing seeds, watering plants, caring for crops and observing changes over time.
These experiences develop their scientific understanding of plants, growth and seasonal changes, while also supporting learning in geography, design and technology, and healthy eating.
Working together at the allotment encourages teamwork, patience, perseverance and responsibility. Children learn that growing food takes time, care and commitment, making the eventual harvest even more rewarding.
Wellbeing and Our School Community
We believe that spending time outdoors and connecting with nature has a positive impact on children's wellbeing.
Our allotment offers a calm, green environment where children can build confidence, develop independence and enjoy the satisfaction of working together towards a shared goal.
Our allotment is also a wonderful example of our school community working together. We are incredibly fortunate to have supportive parents who generously give their time to help maintain, care for and develop our allotment. Their enthusiasm, practical help and commitment have been invaluable in helping our growing space flourish and ensuring it continues to provide exciting learning opportunities for our children.
We are extremely grateful for their ongoing support and recognise the important role our families play in making our allotment such a special part of school life.
We warmly welcome continued involvement from our school community, whether through volunteering, sharing gardening knowledge and resources or helping us develop new ideas for our growing space.
Growing Our Future – RHS School Gardening Awards
We are excited to begin working towards the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) School Gardening Awards, demonstrating our ongoing commitment to outdoor learning, gardening, sustainability and caring for the environment.
Through this journey, we hope to build upon the wonderful work already taking place at our allotment, encouraging children to develop their gardening knowledge, practical skills and understanding of the natural world.
Our aim is to inspire a lifelong love of nature and the outdoors, while giving children opportunities to take responsibility, work collaboratively and experience the rewards of growing their own food.
As we work towards achieving these awards, we look forward to involving our children in new gardening projects, celebrating their achievements and continuing to develop our allotment as a valuable and inspiring outdoor learning space.
